Family Tree Prehistory:
A look back at RoundTree
Before starting Family Tree, Derek Smith, Andy Smith, and Kevin Turner were members of the band RoundTree with bassist Jonathan Reynolds. RoundTree sowed the seeds that eventually would sprout into Family Tree in 1998.

(1997)
Tracklist:
-
Heaven is Truth
- Don't Feed Me Hate
- Change the Season
- Heard Enough
- More
- The Writing
|
Info: RoundTree's first demo CD featured alt-rock influenced jams along with messages of love and peace that can be found in the music of Family Tree today. Still, this "embryonic Family Tree" CD has an overall sound that is quite different from its successor.

"Mushroom
Man" EP
(1998)
Tracklist:
-
Island
- Rain Fall Heavy
- Breathe In Slowly
|
Info: Unlike Mercy for the Kind, this untitled CD, released shortly before the band's breakup, features a dynamic sound much more akin to what would become Family Tree. This is all too apparent in "Rain Fall Heavy," which was later reinvented as a Family Tree song and is still regularly played at shows to this day! This recording showcases some of RoundTree's strongest material, and is an interesting "missing link" from what RoundTree was and what Family Tree was to become.
